Incredibly relevant: Should be required curriculum
My husband and I, both activists against the now “legal” Proposition 8 in California, just finished watching this outstanding documentary, followed by the incredible bonus “reunion” track. We were so strongly moved that I had to write a review immediately.

While fighting Prop. 8, although we were aware of previous attempts by the religious right, both within California and without, to legislate their ongoing dehumanization of gays and lesbians, we did not realize that there existed this 1995 documentary about Oregon’s ballot measure 9, let alone the fact that Heather MacDonald had updated her film in 2007 with new footage in which some of the activists were reunited and discuss what they learned during that fight. The resemblance of the still-recent Prop. 8 battle to what happened in Oregon in 1992 is uncanny. But the comments made fifteen years later, on the bonus track, about the campaign against ballot measure 9 by activists Kathleen Saadat and Donna Red Wing were chillingly on target about what happened just last year in California, even though that battle had yet to be fought. Frustratingly, Californians could have learned a very important lesson from this monumental struggle, yet our ignorance and complacency prevented us from doing so.

The film portrays in vivid detail the extreme climate of fear, hate and violence that proponents of BM 9 created for gays and lesbians all over the state of Oregon. Yes, people actually died as a direct result of pro-BM 9 violence. Watching the film, it was hard to believe that something like that could happen in America, yet we know very well from the venom spewed by anti-gay churches and other organization what these modern fascists are capable of. Although the forces of justice prevailed on election night in Oregon, the message the film conveys is that all of us have a responsibility to continue to fight the forces of hate, ignorance, lies and misinformation that conspire to take anyone’s rights away, whether it is our own or our neighbor’s. The gay community has so long been oppressed — and continues to be so — that we often forget that we too must come to the table and speak out against injustices against others, even in “times of peace,” not just when there’s a raging legislative battle, because then it’s too late. If we truly want the loving, tolerant society we dream of living in, where every human being has value, we must all work to create it. That means having the courage to come out and be visible. Even those of us who are already out often choose to remain invisible, to not push the envelope, to not cause controversy by something as simple as holding hands. Unfortunately, this only allows us to be oppressed further.

Ballot Measure 9 conveys the message of community-building and common humanity so effectively, so touchingly, that I believe every university, high school, library and community group should have a copy and show it freely and often. Buy a copy! Have a movie-viewing party at your house with friends and family! This message is too important to ignore.

    A Word to the Wise
In an election year where everything is close, something like this could show up as a Constitutinal Amendment: No Special Rights amendment. You could get people ,at the federal level, who say it will never make it through the states.

This movie illustrates how a mob menatality on anything, in this case Gay Rights, could actually be made into law. Fortunately, they lost this round. It illustrates the mindless mentality of the bully in the tactics employed against those who fought this amendment. Now ,at least, we have the Australion Ballot System.

What is really scary is that it would be so easy to have something like this go through the process to become an amendment to the constitution at the national level. It would take around less than 1/5th of the countries population pressuring their state legislatures to approve one. Remember that the small states that would have an equal vote is usually the states that go to the Conservative mentality on issues like this.

Then there would be no support from the courts because it would be the de facto law of the land in the constitution. 2/3rds of the state legislatures is a scary thing to envisage. It is not that hard to get. Look at the current spate of Protecting Marriage laws on the books concerning Gay Marriage.

    America as She Is
    “Ballot Measure 9″

    America as She Is

    Amos Lassen

“Ballot Measure 9″ tells the story in a documentary of the 1992 struggle to defeat the anti-gay ballot iniative in Oregon and a chilling and sobering tale it is as it shows the context of the movement at large. You would not expect a film on a subject like this to be uninteresting but it is quite though provoking and provocative at the same time. Heather MacDonald who wrote and directed the film, it looks carefully at the hysteria and hatred which was brought about by those in opposition to “special rights for gays and lesbians”. These people were urged onward by members of the Christian right. It is quite easy to see how the director tried very hard to maintain a balance between the pros and the cons of the measure but the true empathy of the film lies with those who organized themselves and others to oppose and defeat the measure. These were laws that would have denied legal recourse against discrimination in housing and employment to homosexuals. Likewise ballot measure 9 would have prevented cities from enacting their own legislation for civil rights for gays and lesbians.

MacDonald was able to interview many of the more virulent opponents to the measure and thereby gives us a very important look at a significant document in the history of our civil rights. Here is a wonderful documentary on the horrendous attempt of the Oregon Citizen’s Alliance to destroy equal rights in this country. We get to see the moments of victory and those of defeat on both sides of the issue. This movie is a good instrument to be used to frighten people of the hatred that exists in America and movies like this can stir the citizenry to action to defeat the propaganda and insecurities that organizations like the Oregon Citizen’s Council promote.

“Ballot Measure 9″ should be required viewing for all Americans because it so beautifully shows how the denial of rights to one group affects the entire country.

Really well done, painful, funny, important
I’m so happy to find this video here. I have a copy that is worn out from playing for my students every year. It shows the human side of the impact of the anti-gay hate movement. The level of ignorance from the hate mongers about homosexuality would be comical if not for the fact that some fearful homophobes turn to violence, as this important film illustrates.

    spectacular
The first time I saw this video, I was alone, at home, and broke down into tears at the surreal level of hate aimed at lesbians and gay men. The second time I saw it was at the New York LGBT Film Festival; I could hear that scores of other adults were weeping with me in the dark. We’ve come a long way since 1992, thank God, farther than most of us would have expected at the time. But it’s still good to know how recently lesbians and gay men were utter pariahs, and how much irrational hatred still could erupt if encouraged by public leaders–either towards lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered folks or toward other unpopular groups, if the majority does not come to their aid.

    Simple & Easy Clean up
I had the opportunity to experience juicing on a loaned Jack Lalanne’s JLSS Power Juicer Deluxe Electric Juicer, Stainless/Black. After juicing every day with it for over three weeks I realized I really was into juicing and it was not some new Gadget phase I was going through. So I did a ton of research and chose the Omega 8006.

The first thing I can tell you is this is not as noisy as the centrifuge juicer I tried (Jack L juicer). The sound is similar to an old hand mixer on low speed.

The second thing clean up took less time and was easier. Mainly the parts are smaller so they’re easier to clean thoroughly. There are no awkward nooks & crannies where food can get stuck. The Omega 8600 clean up involves four main parts. The (1) shoot the food comes down, (2) blade is really a big plastic drill-bit looking thing, (3) the part which determines is the stuff you are grinding going to come out in juice form or a more solid form (such as pasta or banana yogurt!), (4) and finally the collector bins - either or both depending upon what you are doing. It takes more time for me to get the hot water going than the length of time it takes to do the clean up for the Omega 8600.

Preparation is a bigger deal than with other juicers because the opening is much smaller. Some carrots for example had to be cut in 4ths to get it down the shoot. As one reviewer said with another Omega model, it gives you time to think about what you are preparing. The liquid output appears bolder/brighter and without foam compared to the centrifuge juicer.

It’s funny, I do notice I pause before preparing my juice to ponder would this be just as good for me if I were to sit and eat the orange, apple and carrots versus putting them into this machine and blend them. What enhances my experience with juicing is the other ingredients such as adding that bit of ginger - yum! When I was using the centrifuge, I thought more about if I had time to do the clean-up after.

The machine itself is sturdy. Having it in a place where you can add the ingredients easily rather than having it stuffed under the cabinet will enhance your access and ease of use.

I am VERY happy with the Omega 8600. It was difficult to wait the 3 weeks - I’m typically a want it now buyer. Mine showed up a few days earlier. I filled my time in cleaning out my refrigerator in preparing to integrate juicing in my diet.

See uploaded picture of my juicing station.

Finally one bit of advice.. No matter what kind of Juicer you acquire - CLEAN UP right after you juice, drink after - clean first! This prevents anything from WELDING to any parts later. Happy Juicing!

Great juice but auger is chipping / scratching…….
I purchased this juicer and it arrived in the mail yesterday. I purchased because of the other great reviews out there for it being a great juicer all-around for pretty much everything, along with the great price. It seemed like the perfect package.

Let there be no doubt, this really does produce a great quality juice. I am a little nervous, however, about one thing. I washed all the parts for the first time and then I proceeded to make carrot juice with some greens in it, and then also tried some frozen bananas and strawberries to make a sorbet. Both recipes were very successful, and, the cleanup was also very easy. Although I should mention I had to partially thaw the strawberries as they were just too hard for the juicer to initially accept them.

My concern is that after cleaning and drying the auger, I noticed that even after only the very first use of the machine the auger has scratch marks on it - some of them noticeably deep. The scratch marks are from places where the auger comes in to contact with metal that is on the inside of the juicing screen. Also when I hold just the auger and the juicing screen in my hand and turn the auger inside of it, you can hear and feel how the auger seems to catch on something during the rotation.

I am currently giving this juicer a rating of three stars because although I have found it to produce an excellent quality juice for carrots and greens alike, the fact that plastic (or whatever the auger is made of) is slowly being added to my juice and the pulp makes me wonder if that is healthy!

I would greatly appreciate anyone’s comments on this as I should also note that I am new to juicing, however, I have thoroughly examined the machine and how to assemble it and don’t believe I’ve done anything which would have contributed to such easy scratching of the auger.

I have emailed Omega to ask about this concern but have not heard back so far (it’s been 1 day since the email was sent so I’m giving them more time). I imagine they must be busy right now with the high demand for this new juicer.

It is my hope that I will be able to eventually up the rating from 3 to 5 stars, however, how could I with plastic chipping in to my food? I leave the rating at three stars because it really does make excellent juice, but at what cost (plastic in the food)?

    Better than imagined!
This product was more than I expected. I had been using another brand that functions similarly, but it was much slower and the juice was much foamier. This product Rocks as a mid priced juicer with great components, fast juicing (once you slice your veg’s/fruits to fit in the chute) and very little foam. The item is so sturdy, it’s very easy to take apart and assemble and clean. It takes about 5 minutes to juice 12-16 oz juice if you have the prep work done. And about 3-5 min’s to clean the parts. The juice quality is definitely better than centrifugal juicers. This juicer does a great job on Greens especially. This juicer makes me want to juice all the time. It also comes with other parts so you can make your own almond milk, peanut butter, pasta, baby food, etc.. I am going to freeze bananas and berries and put it through the blank coned screen and make a smooth frozen yogurt type desert. The 8003, 8005, and 8006 are functionally all the same. I have the 8006 and the new auger is black, so it’s very nice and it’s just a little stronger and 15 yr. warranty instead of 10 years. I am extremely pleased with my purchase.

    Omega J8006 Juicer review
I really like the juicer. It does as it said it would and makes more juice than the previous juicer (Jack Lehman’s). It does however require quite a bit more preparation time to cut up the fruit and vegetables to fit into the small chute. It is very easy to use and clean. Overall I am extemely satisfied and would recommend it to anybody who enjoys juicing. It you haven’t tried juicing, try it. It is worth the investment in your health and the entire family’s.

    Amazing juicer
I love this juicer. It is easy to assemble, easy to clean and very powerful. I have been using for about 6 weeks, and juice daily. I highly recommend this juicer

    Actron voltage tester
I thought this item was the same product I had purchased at RadioShack a few years ago. I wanted employees that worked on trailers to have a tool like this to check voltage on trailer wire harnesses when lights failed to work without disassembling the wiring plug or lights. This tool is not as compact as the RadioShack model and although it lists continuity testing as a feature of the tool, it does not have it’s own battery to power a continuity test, (again the RadioShack model does). The wire probe does not center itself on the wire as well either. The probe is too loose and can move off to one side of the wire or the other without piercing into the copper conductor. It’s okay, just not as good as the tool I own and not as good as I had hoped for.

DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM AND BUYER BEWARE
We bought this unit to replace another Canon unit which worked very well for many years. Unfortunately this unit was defective from the beginning. The paper would feed properly from the paper tray. Beware of the Amazon return policy, the suppliers return policy, the manufacturers warranty and the extended warranty which Amazon sells. First, the Amazon return policy is only within the first three days after you receive the product. The Amazon Suppliers return policy is 30 days after you receive the product. Unforunately for us, we did not deploy the until approximately 3 weeks after we got the unit and did not discover the defect until the 32nd day after we recieved the unit. Amazon would not help us and the Supplier basically said tough luck! If there is a problem than it is up to Canon to fix. Canon has a very poor field repair process. In fact Canon does not send out Canon trained repair persons. Rather they are independant contractors who at least in our case knew very little about Canon products. And, it can take up to a week before Canon can get one of these independant contractors to your site. So, we thought we had an extended warranty for which we paid over $100 for ant for which we thought we could rely on. Were we mistaken!!! The warranty says in fine print, which you do not get until after you buy the warranty that it only becomes effective after the Manufacturer’s warranty expires. In this case the Canon Warranty is one year so the extended warranty we purchased from Amazon does us no good for at least one year.

The long and short of it is, we have a defective product that Canon has not been able to correct, Amazon will not help us and the Amazon supplier says “Sorry, but our contract with Canon says we can not do anything for you after the first thirty days of receipt of the product.

Good luck, but I hope you will be smarter than we were.

    Can’t complain
Canon MF6590 Duplex Copier, Printer, and Color Scanner with Super G3 Fax

Canon had a huge rebate on this so I just bought it on the spot not having a possibility to do some research.

Yes it does not scan over the network, at least the manual says it does not but that is not a huge setback for me as one of my computers is connected to it via a USB port anyway.

One thing that I miss more a wireless connection, without it you must setup the printer near a network outlet.

Unlike someone stated above mine did come with a starter toner not a full one.

Another thing to pay attention to is to read the manual before use. I never do so I spent more than hour trying to make my computers find the printer on the network. The manual describes where to get the IP address if it cannot be discovered automatically. Once I glanced thought the instructions the setup was a breeze. The good outcome of it however is that while I tried to find where the problem was I finally replaired my home network.

I expected this printer to be a bit smaller. I could not cramp the box in the trunk of my Camry, which is far not small.

The printer functions well hopefully it will serve better than my two previous laser printers that lived only for the duration of one cattridge.

Great Copier, Great Scanner, Good Printer
The copy, and Scan features work great.

Printing from the main paper drawer works great.

The side tray does not want to take the sheets of labels every time.

    This can be frustrating.

    Otherwise, good product.

    Satisfied Customer
I purchased the Canon MF6590 as an upgrade to an HP injet All-in-one (6310). I was looking for duplex scanning and printing. These functions work perfectly (with the one caveat that to scan, you must use the USB connection rather than the network connection). Primary difference between this machine and comparably priced machines is the ability to scan 2 sided documents. Also, this model comes with the full -106 cartridge (not a starter cartridge)

Printing (B&W) and scanning is fast, efficient, and relatively quite. I haven’t used the fax capability, so I can’t comment on that feature. I have used the device to scan and print thousands of pages without any problems. I still haven’t had to replace the cartridge (which I shouldn’t have had to).

For the money, this is a great machine which I would recommend to others.

    Misleading Network Capabilities
This network ready printer/copier/scanner/fax was purchased for the office about a week ago. It arrived, and was installed on the network without any significant issue. I left for the weekend, after discarding the packaging, and returned this morning to finish the network installation. It was then that I discovered that this network ready printer/copier/scanner/fax isn’t really all that network ready. Sure, I can print across the network, but I can’t scan across the network. This device was purchased for only two reasons: printing and scanning, both which must support network use.

At roughly $550.00, I expected a lot more. I have a significantly less expensive inkjet printer/copier/scanner/fax at home that actually will scan across the network, and yet this expensive piece of junk can’t? Very disappointing, and in my opinion, very misleading. So, be warned, that if you are looking for a network scanner, look elsewhere.

    Excellent customer service!
I’ve only had this watch for a few days and it has worked great so far. I am not an expert at configuring pedometers and everything else the watch does so I had to call Tech4O customer service. To my surprise a very nice lady answered at the beginning of the second ring. We had a great conversation and she helped me program all necessary functions on my watch. I had dialed the 800 number from my speaker phone because I thought I would be on hold forever, navigating through prompts, and praying for a pulse. But no, I had a surprisingly refreshing experience with a very nice helpful person. I highly recommend this company and product.

    Great watch plus
I purchased this watch for myself and the women’s version for my wife. We have been extremely happy with them. They give you so much information about your workout that it almost makes it fun.

    Great Gift
My husband and I bought this watch for our son in law for Christmas. He used it that very day to run with and was very excited about all of the information that was available to him. We enjoyed giving him something that he really liked and could use.

    Great!
My husband is an avid runner and loves the watch! He had to adjust the stride length a few times to get the most accurate results, but otherwise it’s an awesome watch.

    I wish this were metal
Plastic watches feel cheap. Its not their fault, they just do. This watch is like an ugly car with a race car engine. I love the features. I appreciate the automatic reset for counting distance and I am impressed with the accuracy. Its amazing that this watch can tell the difference between walking and running and that it is accurate even if I have my hands in my pocket instead of swinging around. I haven’t used the speed function, because I’m not that fast and by the time I think of that function, I’m just standing and my speed is zero. The same is true with the calories counter, although I just think that’s worthless as a feature anyway. The included manual seems cramped and poorly written, but the online guide is great. Again, I wish there was a version of this watch in metal.
